In Living Color
Blues on the Green
Head to Zilker Park every other Wednesday night May 25 through August 3 for live music, food trailers and great people-watching. This free summertime staple celebrated its 25th anniversary last year. (Past bands have included Bob Schneider, Shakey Graves and Jimmie Vaughan.) This year’s lineup includes Mike Flanigin’s The Drifter, Wild Child, Hayes Carll and Sweet Spirit. Bring dogs on leashes along with a big blanket or lawn chairs, but leave alcohol and glass bottles at home. Parking is limited. The show starts at 8 p.m. Check the schedule online.

Austin Symphony Concerts in the Park
The hill is alive with the sound of music! Most Sunday nights from the end of May through August, the Austin Symphony presents free shows at Hartman Concert Park at The Long Center. Each week features a different ensemble, from strings to woodwinds to brass. Pack something to sit on and a picnic, and take advantage of free parking at One Texas Center. Shows start at 7:30 p.m.
Unsung Heroes
Karaoke Underground
Consider this the guerilla radio alternative to Top 40 karaoke. Instead of singing the same tired renditions of “Don’t Stop Believin’” and “Sweet Caroline,” here you can belt out songs from artists like The Misfits, The Pixies and Joy Division. Check out Karaoke Underground on the first Saturday of the month at Nomad, the third Thursday of the month at Spider House, third Saturdays at Indian Roller and last Sundays at Drinks Lounge. Free.

Unplugged at the Grove
Eat, drink and be merry! For more than two decades, KGSR has presented Unplugged at the Grove on the patio at Shady Grove. From April through September, catch outdoor concerts from local artists like Charlie Mars and Alejandro Escovedo every Thursday night. The free show starts at 8 p.m., but get there a couple of hours early to get a seat and enjoy food and drink specials. Parking for the event is scarce, so ridesharing, biking or walking are your best bets.
