Huey Rey Fischer’s campaign is using dating apps Tinder and Grindr as part of their effort to engage millennials in the Democratic Primary. Fischer, 23, describes himself as the “youngest and only openly queer candidate” in the race for District 49, which includes most of Central Austin between MoPac Expressway and Interstate 35.
“Tinder and Grindr help us directly connect with other millennials in a fun way. The electorate is changing and so is the game of politics,” Fischer said.
As for users’ response, campaign manager Allison Heinrich says the strategy is working. “Users have welcomed our outreach. They are committing to vote for Huey because they see a candidate who can actually relate to them.”
Fischer and several of the other candidates took part in a forum on Feb. 8 at the University of Texas. Early voting for the Texas Primary continues through Friday, Feb. 26.
