AUSTIN (KXAN) — Students, staff and the Austin community are invited to a preview of Austin Community College’s state-of-the-art biotechnology incubator coming to ACC Highland on Thursday for the groundbreaking ceremony.

The idea behind the Advanced Commercialization ACCelerator is to develop public-private partnerships by setting up a biotechnology research facility.
The state of Texas awarded Austin Community College $4.9 million to develop a highly specialized biotechnology research lab, known as a wet lab to address a critical shortage of research space in the region. It will now be the first community college in the state to build a wet lab and ACC will serve as a resource for Central Texas’ growing bio-medical industry.
The facility will be constructed in the former Highland Mall complex. Officials with the project say it will address a critical shortage of research space in the region while providing a hands-on learning environment for biotechnology students.When it opens later this year, the biotech incubator will also lease wet lab space to companies developing products such as pharmaceuticals and medical devices.
Thursdays groundbreaking ceremony features a virtual demolition unveiling architectural renderings along with demonstrations from ACC biotechnology students and visual tours of the wet lab site.
The event takes place Thursday, Feb. 4, from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at ACC Highland (6101 Airport Blvd).
